Emission lines from gas are a powerful diagnostic of chemical and physical conditions in protoplanetary disks. Most importantly, studies of gas disk emission help provide important constraints on how disks evolve and disperse before perhaps forming planetary systems. I will review our limited knowledge of the gas content of disks, summarize recent advances made with Spitzer and Herschel, and discuss how future observations with FIR instruments such as SPICA will extend our understanding of disk evolution, dispersal and planet formation.
