The gas-dynamic effects due to the gravitational perturbation of the gas of galaxies and clusters of galaxies when cosmic strings pass through them are discussed. A numerical calculation and analytic estimate of the luminosity of the matter perturbed by the shock wave lead in the case of clusters of galaxies to a value small compared with the characteristic luminosity of the cluster gas. The passage of a string through individual galaxies can, in principle, be observed.
