A model binary system, with the infrared companion's radiation being scattered in the primary's optically thin ellipsoidal envelope, is adopted to analyze the infrared linear-polarization spectrum of RY Tau. This binary has a 3-yr orbital period. Both the wavelength dependence of the envelope flattening and the mismatch of the (Q, U) polarization vector with the orbital phase on certain dates are attributable to charged particles whose gyroradii have a large dispersion in the star's variable magnetic field.
