The southern blazar PKS 0208-512 is one of the most prominent gamma-ray sources in the extragalactic sky. Over the course of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory mission (1991-2000) it was detected numerous times with the high-energy EGRET telescope, and also identified as an ``MeV blazar'' candidate with the medium-energy COMPTEL instrument. We present a comprehensive summary of the gamma-ray observations of this source from GeV to MeV energies with EGRET and COMPTEL. At GeV energies PKS 0208-512 was highly variable on several time scales, and exhibited significant spectral evolution in its high-energy emission between high and low states of activity. It is one of the most dramatic examples of this effect in the EGRET database. We also summarize the results of a search for MeV emission from this object during individual CGRO viewing periods, and assess their implications. Finally, we interpret the gamma-ray measurements in terms of recent models of the production of high-energy emission in gamma-ray AGNs, and consider the likely contribution of such sources to the cosmic diffuse gamma-ray background.
