Data from the MPE balloon experiment are reviewed which indicate that Al-26, an isotope with a half-life of only a million years, is being synthesized in the Galactic nucleus, and not uniformly over the entire Galaxy. The shape of the map of the central region in Al-26 1.8 MeV gamma rays is consistent with what would be expected from a point source, with the maximum probability for the position of the source being very near the Galactic center. The total amount of Al-26 from the observations is too much to have been produced in the 30,000 or so supernovae that can have occurred in the Galaxy in one isotopic half-life. The observations could theoretically be accounted for by simple novae. If a strong concentration toward the Galactic center is confirmed, an alternative nucleosynthetic mechanism, possibly involving the annihilation of positrons emitted in Al-26 - Mg-26 decay, may have to be invoked.
