The COB-B satellite is instrumented with an X-ray proportional counter detector operating in the energy range 2 to 12 keV, known as the pulsar 'synchronizer', in order to search for possible pulsed gamma rays emission from sources identified as pulsars in the X-ray range. The source pulsation period and phase in the satellite reference frame are determined by the X-ray synchronizer for observation time intervals short enough to eliminate the need for corrections for Doppler effect along the satellite orbit and drifts of the on board clock. The continuously updated values of the local period and phase are then used for the time analysis of the source emission in the gamma energy range for which the expected observation time can last up to several days. The phase analysis method developed was tested with Monte-Carlo-simulated X-ray data for a spectrum of period values, pulse structure, and source intensities. Test equipment providing a pulsating X-ray flux was used to test the overall instrument response and the method of analysis.
