Studies to examine astrophysical objects in various ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum using gamma ray instrumentation are described. Particular features of gamma-ray telescopes and orbital space observatories are discussed. Structural design criteria and specifics of instrumentation are described in detail for both American and U.S.S.R. programs. Equipment diagrams, specifically for gamma-ray telescopes spark chambers and scintillation counters are presented. Similar diagrams and descriptions are given for gamma-ray telescopes for soft gamma radiation and for medium-energy telescopes.
