The beaming of curvature radiation from closed and filled neutron star magnetospheres can overcome a number of well-known problems associated with older γ-ray burst models invoking dead pulsars. Our calculations naturally explain the spectral evolution of γ-ray bursts, while sufficiently reducing the energy required to produce them as compared to isotropic emission, making it possible to observe these events at cosmological distances.
