A gamma-ray burst model is developed based on a nuclear explosion in the shell of a neutron star as a result of a chain fission reaction involving superheavy nuclei. It is shown that the main part of the gamma-ray burst radiation must be of thermal origin, but that a nonthermal component and gamma-ray lines may be present. The parameters of the intense burst of Mar. 5, 1979 are evaluated on the basis of the emission spectra and the present model; the distance to this burst is about 100 pc and the total energy is about 2 x 10 to the 39th ergs.
