Each new window of the electromagnetic spectrum has given a different view of the Universe and the gamma-ray window is no exception. Although still in its infancy the new subject of gamma-ray astronomy has already yielded important results: specifically, the identification of a number of discrete gamma-ray sources, the observation of an extragalactic continuum - perhaps of cosmological importance - and the identification of a component which appears to come from the interaction of cosmic rays with the gas in the interstellar medium. It is this last aspect which is of main concern in the present paper. The claim is made that the gamma-ray results tell us that the bulk of the cosmic rays come from sources in our own Galaxy - a result of considerable interest (if substantiated!).
