A GOES X9.4 solar flare occurred on 6 November 1997 at a heliographic location of S18W63 with soft X-ray emission peaking at ~11:55 UT. The Japanese satellite Yohkoh emerged from an SAA transit just prior to the onset of hard X-ray emission. Strong emission of X rays and gamma rays were detected lasting for about 250 seconds, followed by extended low-level emission lasting for another ~600 seconds (until ~12:06 UT). Emission up to 100 MeV was detected with narrow gamma-ray lines at 2.22 MeV (from neutron capture) and at 4.44, 6.13 and 7 MeV (from 12C and 16O) clearly observed. OSSE, on board CGRO, emerged from an SAA transit at ~12:08 UT. Strong >16 MeV emission was detected which was identified as neutrons using a pulse-shape discrimination technique. We present results of a new analysis of the Yohkoh hard X-ray and gamma-ray data using an improved background subtraction technique. Using measured gamma-ray line fluences, we determine the interacting accelerated-particle spectrum and energy content. We compare the observed OSSE neutron count rates with predictions based on the gamma-ray results and show that the accelerated-particle spectrum probably hardened late in the flare.
