Data are discussed which were obtained with several X-ray, gamma ray, and charged particle detectors on board Prognoz 2. The detectors are described, the chronology of the observed events is outlined, and the flares are correlated with type II radio bursts. It is thought that the three-minute delay between the onset of a flare and the onset of a gamma burst either characterizes the propagation velocity of a shock wave from its place of origin to the region of gamma radiation generation or reflects the specific properties of the proton generation mechanism. It is concluded that the energetic proton component in these two flares appeared after the formation of a shock wave originating in the explosive phase of a flare. Based on this conclusion, a model is proposed for describing the evolution of a solar flare.
