The joint encounter of Jupiter by the Cassini and Galileo Spacecraft in December of 2000 offers the unique opportunity to address aspects of Jupiter's space environment that can be addressed in no other way. Foremost is the question of the influence of the interplanetary environment, or solar wind, on the dynamics and energetics of Jupiter's magnetosphere. The Galileo Energetic Particle Detector (EPD) observed distinct and relatively isolated dynamical events deep within Jupiter's inner and middle magnetosphere at the same time that the Cassini spacecraft was sampling the interplanetary environment. With regard to another topic, recent Galileo EPD observations of the structure of the energetic particle populations within Jupiter's inner magnetosphere, and also EPD evidence of substantial neutral gas populations in the vicinity of Europa, bear strongly on the interpretation of the remote sensing of Jupiter's magnetosphere using Energetic Neutral Atoms by the Cassini Magnetospheric Imaging (MIMI) Instrument. The ENA emissions may emanate predominantly from more distant regions of the magnetosphere than previously thought. These and other findings are reviewed.
