Recent GALEX observation reveals enhanced UV emission from an unexpectedly large fraction of early-type galaxies in the local universe, which has been interpreted as evidence of recent star formation (RSF). Here we have examined the physical characteristics of the RSF activities, investigated their influence on the various scaling relations of early-types, and finally made statistical surveys of the environments, redshifts, and luminosity of the RSF galaxies.
We gratefully acknowledge NASA's support for construction, operation, and scientific analysis for the GALEX mission. S.-J. Yoon is funded by the Glasstone Fellowship at Oxford University and by the Korean Science and Engineering Foundation.
