We review recent results from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer survey of the UV sky bearing directly on galaxy evolution since z 1. We have constructed the bivariate UV-optical color-magnitude function for the local universe, and use it to constrain the properties of blue and red sequence galaxies, transitions from blue to red sequence, and the co-evolution of galaxies and active galactic nuclei. We have used GALEX UV data combined with Spitzer and optical surveys to probe the evolution of the UV-optical color magnitude diagram, the bivariate UV-Far IR luminosity function, the evolution of extinction in star forming galaxies, and the evolution in the modality of star formation. We discuss on-going work to develop a direct calibration of extinction in UV-selected galaxies. We describe the physical properties of UV luminous galaxies detected in the local universe which may be analogs to z 3-4 Lyman Break Galaxies. Finally, we describe our studies of the properties of star formation in diffuse, low pressure regimes such as the extended disks of nearby galaxies, and evidence for variations in the initial mass function.
