We propose to obtain deep H(alpha) Mosaic images in a 1-square degree region around the large elliptical M86, the dominant galaxy in a sub-cluster now merging with the rest of the Virgo cluster. Previous 4m mosaic H(alpha) images show a remarkable set of spatially complex filamentary H(alpha) features around M86, which extend beyond the 36' FOV. These features can reveal how galaxy and cluster gas is heated, disturbed, and ejected in cluster interactions. The origin of the H(alpha) in M86 filaments is not entirely clear, probably because 2 or 3 major interactions are presently occuring. In addition to the high- velocity (1500 km/s) ICM-ISM interaction expected as M86 falls into the cluster, there is suggestive evidence that M86 has interacted with at least 2 of the large nearby spirals, NGC 4388 and NGC 4438. We propose to image a larger area, to a greater depth, and with 2 different velocity H(alpha) filters. We wish to extend the imaging region to cover the nearby galaxies which appear to have interacted with M86, and to image both the low-velocity gas with velocities near M86, and the high-velocity gas with velocities near the colliding partner NGC 4388. M86 is the nearest example of a sub-cluster merger, providing the best opportunity to understand what happens to the galaxy ISM and cluster ICM during such a dramatic interaction.
