We present discoveries of galaxy clusters with the South Pole Telescope within a 40 square degree, three color Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) survey.
The number of galaxy clusters at a given redshift depends strongly on the expansion history of the universe as well as the relative abundances of matter, dark matter and dark energy during structure formation. The brightness of the SZ signal from a galaxy cluster is nearly redshift independent, making it a powerful tool for discovering galaxy clusters that were forming when dark energy was becoming important.
The South Pole Telescope is a ten meter off-axis telescope located at the geographic South Pole. With its large aperture and observing bands at 90, 150 and 220 GHz, the telescope is optimized for high angular resolution measurements of the CMB.
A portion of the 2007 and 2008 observing seasons were used to map a 40 square degree Blanco Cosmology Survey field in all three of our frequencies. We apply a matched filter to our CMB maps in order to locate cluster candidates. This method uses knowledge of the CMB and other noise contributions to optimally filter the map while preserving the SZ signal. We report only our highest significant candidates that have subsequently been verified by the BCS data set.
