The star counts of MacCuskey (1938) in Taurus and Perseus are compared with the Lick galaxy counts of Shane and Wirtanen (1967) for b less than 10 deg. It is found that the absorption derived from star counts suffers from serious zero level errors. This is due to the fact that none of the reference fields used by MacCuskey is really free of interstellar extinction. Furthermore, this comparison allows a more reliable calibration of the absorption derived from galaxy counts. Finally, a corrected map of the interstellar extinction in Taurus and Perseus is presented in galactic coordinates.
