The author presents an automatic galaxy-counting technique capable of providing non-subjective evidence for the association of galaxies and QSOs. Applying this procedure on deep CCD images of the fields of 12 distant (z ≥ 1.7) flat-spectrum quasars, he finds a significant rise of the number density of relatively bright (r < 21m.5) galaxies towards the quasar position. The most plausible explanation is gravitational lensing by foreground objects, especially by stars in intervening galaxies (micro-lensing). In some cases, the gravitational field of a group of galaxies surrounding the quasar image may give rise to additional amplification (macro-lensing).
