The largest of the initial Spitzer Legacy programs, the Spitzer Wide-Field InfraRed Extragalactic (SWIRE) survey covers 45 square degrees in all Spitzer mid-and far-infrared imaging bands. We have identified from this survey a reliable sample of objects with relatively bright 24 micron flux densities, but with no discernible emission in survey images at other Spitzer wavelengths or in optical bands. At an areal density of about 1 source per 5 square degrees, this sample represents a population that is less than 1/10,000th of all 24 micron sources found in the SWIRE survey. For three objects with the largest lower limits on the ratio of 24 micron to 3.6 micron emission, we have obtained followup mid-infrared spectra with the Spitzer IRS instrument, covering 14 to 35 microns observed wavelength. We present our selection method, the spectra of these three objects, and the results of spectral template fitting indicating that these galaxies lie at redshifts 2.2 and beyond, and are powered at least in part by highly dust-extincted AGN.
This work is based in part on observations made with the Spitzer Space Telescope, and support was provided by NASA through an award issued by JPL/Caltech.
