This contribution previews the results of two upcoming papers, one about the spectroscopic identification of star-forming galaxies at z˜ 7, their Lyα properties and the implications for the IGM neutral fraction at that epoch (Fontana et al. 2010); and another about the discovery of massive amounts of cold gas (T ˜ 104 K, NH > 1020 cm-2, M ˜ 1012 M&sun;) in a large overdensity of galaxies at z ˜ 1.6 with chemical composition apparently more pristine than that of the gas in the outflows of star-forming galaxies in the same overdensity and also at comparable redshift, arguably a plausible candidate to feed putative "cold accretion", if this thing exists (Giavalisco et al. 2010).
