The sidereal time variation in the geomagnetic horizontal component data of Alibag (18 deg 38 min N) is analyzed. Hourly mean values for 2100-0400 LT (1600-2300 UT) for international quiet days during four solar quiet epochs are considered. No systematic smooth sidereal time variation is found. Clear field depressions of about 1 gamma are indicated around sidereal times 4, 12, 16, and 18-22 hr. This effect is correlated with the transit times of individual galactic X ray sources, suggesting that these sources produce an effective and detectable ionization.
