The use of Hipparcos satellite radial velocity, proper motion, and distance data to extrapolate galactic dynamics and structure from local stellar kinematics is suggested. Gradients of radial and tangential velocities of stars with respect to distance, and their dependence on galactic longitude can be derived from observations. These gradients can be compared with theoretical models of the velocity field, providing, e.g., more knowledge about star formation and spiral structure.
