Statistical analysis of the space distribution of bright stars and open clusters in the fourth quadrant of the galactic plane shows that, with virtually 100 percent probability, the Sagittarius-Carina spiral feature cannot be simply a chance fluctuation in star density superposed on a uniform distribution. The Sgr-Car feature has a spiral pitch angle of 6.6 deg and a distance of 1.0 kpc from the sun. A statistically significant transverse age gradient has been detected: young objects (O and M I-II stars) are about 100 pc closer to the inner edge of the Sgr-Car arm than older objects (B, A, F supergiants), thereby supporting the density-wave interpretation of spiral structure.
