The Newtonian limit of gravitational theory with a quadratic Lagrangian is derived. Subject to spherical symmetry the resulting equation has an exponentially increasing term, rather than a logarithmic one as required for the constant rotation curves observed for galaxies. It is argued that if quadratic Lagrangian theory explains constant galactic rotation curves then non-linearity must play an essential role.
