The results of an optical survey of nebulosity at the South Celestial Pole are combined with the data from a high resolution H I survey to show the presence of an interesting correlation between the gas and dust in this region. It is shown that a dust filament runs parallel to, but displaced toward the galactic plane from, a ridge of enhanced H I emission. It is suggested that this derives from the passage of a shock wave through the system, resulting in the spatial displacement of H I to higher velocities but leaving the dust grains behind, presumably through coupling to the local magnetic field in this area.
