Space Astrometry

Scientific paper

The "Global Astrometric Interferometer for Astrophysics, GAIA" project, which is being considered by ESA, will observe 50 million stars brighter than 15.5 mag, and get the data of positions, proper motions and parallaxes with the precision of 10 μas, along with multi-colour, multi-epoch photometry for these objects. The scientific results of the project will be used to probe deeply in many fields of astronomy, such as galaxy distance scale, stellar evolution, kinematics and dynamics of the Galaxy, linkage among the optical reference frames and dynamical reference frames and extragalactic reference frames. Therefore, the micro-arcsecond astrometry will possibly contribute to the developments in the study of astrophysics, solar system objects and the linkage of reference frames.
