In our study of the shell-type supernova remnant (SNR) G54.4-0.3 and its surrounding molecular material we present high angular resolution CO observations in the direction of cool pointlike IRAS sources, which are candidates for protostars or young stellar objects. Small fields around five of these sources, at different positions of the SNR shell, were mapped in 12CO(1-0) with the IRAM 30-m telescope. Selected positions were additionally observed in (C-13)0 and C(O-18). We detected CO condensations with diameters of about 2 arcmin in the direction of four IRAS sources. Their radial velocities correspond with that of the CO shell around G54.4-0.3 at about 40 km/s v(LSR). We perform calculations on the basis of SNR- and stellar wind shell expansion models. These suggest that the formation of the CO shell results from the interaction of a stellar wind, probably from the SN progenitor, with the parent molecular cloud, and that the SNR has expanded into the wind bubble. This scenario is supported by the morphological evidence for the interaction of the SNR with the surrounding CO shell.
