The paper considers second generation systems using mode-locked Nd:YAG lasers and epoch markers and the development of compact, largely automated, fully mobile stations capable of ranging to both high satellites and the moon with an accuracy of a few centimeters. The use of CO2 lasers and heterodyne detection, which has the advantage that both range and velocity can be measured, is also examined.
