I will summarize recent FUSE and STIS absorption line measurements of atomic and molecular gas in the halos of galaxies. Studies of various neutral and ionized species, such as C I, N I, O I, Al II, Si II, P II, S II, Ar I, Fe II, as well as molecular hydrogen (H2), unveil a remarkable multi-phase structure of the Milky Way halo gas down to very small scales. Galactic halo clouds span a wide range range of metallicities, implying that various processes must be responsible for the presence of the intermediate- and high-velocity clouds in the halo of the Galaxy. I will discuss the implications of these results for our knowledge about the gaseous environment of the Milky Way and other galaxies from a more general perspective.
