A linear polarization map of the jet of 3C 273 in the R-waveband is presented. The previous results of Scarrot and Warren-Smith (1987), in which significant levels of polarization oriented approximately perpendicular to the jet axis were detected throughout the visible jet are confirmed. It is found that there are rapid changes in polarization position angle beyond the bright knot at the extremity of the optical jet. This behavior is very similar to that observed at radio wavelengths. The radiation from the jet at wavelengths longwards of the R-waveband has a synchrotron origin.
