Scientific paper

We propose the continuation of a programme of Chandra ACIS-S observations of very luminous (L(x) > 10^39 erg/s) extra-nuclear X-ray sources in nearby galaxies. Early results from this programme, combined with optical spectro-imaging data, demonstrate the potential of Chandra data to reveal the nature of these sources. The new observations will determine whether more of these objects are truly point-like or whether they are groups of discrete sources and/or truly diffuse emission, providing high quality CCD spectroscopy and astrometry plus gross variability data in each case. This will reveal whether the X-ray luminosity is derived from accreting black holes, recent supernovae, complexes of sources or, perhaps, an entirely new class of astrophysical object.
