Ionospheric electric field measurements made by balloon-carried electric field probes are compared to ionospheric backscatter data. A reasonable correlation is found between the slant E condition (SEC) and enhanced ionospheric electric field. Within limitations of the experimental data, the presence of a threshold electric field for SEC is indicated, consistent with interpretation of SEC in terms of Farley instability.
