Deformable mirror design is discussed in terms of fundamental design equations with key components traceable to systems applications and a historical perspective. A brief overview and comparison of modal and zonal systems and corrector is given in terms of the optical influence function and Zernike polynomials. Zonal mirror types are compared in terms of mirror fitting error coefficients. Design equations are provided to facilitate a first-order design and to show the interdependnece of the equations in the mirror design. Typical systems specifications for atmospheric imaging and optical train distortions are provided to develop working design windows. A detailed summary of both actuator materials and faceplate materials is provided.
