We propose to obtain a deep mosaic of images for the distant cluster CL2053-08. This is an X-ray selected cluster at z=0.58 with a large arc. The extensive imaging will be used for three scientific goals, namely a study of {i} the strong and weak gravitational lensing across the cluster, {ii} the morphological structure of the galaxy population as a function of radius, and {iii} the Fundamental Plane relation for the early-type galaxies. Telescopes at La Palma, Keck, and the MMT are all being used to provide the needed ground-based spectroscopic and imaging data. The Fundamental Plane measurement will give us the evolution of the M/L ratio of early type galaxies with redshift, as well as providing important constraints on the formation and evolution of the early-type galaxies. The morphology of cluster members will be studied as a function of radius from the center, with the ultimate goal of determining the evolution of the morphology- density relation with redshift, based on results from other clusters being mapped with HST. The distribution of {post}starburst galaxies and/or mergers as a function of radius will be of particular interest. The mass distribution will be determined from the distortion of background galaxies by weak lensing. The large arc makes this cluster very suitable, since it provides an independent measurement of the mass distribution.
