We propose to use the FOS to obtain high S/N UV spectral data, covering the wavelength range 1150-2300 A, for six LMC O9-B1.5 Ia supergiants belonging to the morphologically normal and OBN/OBC subgroups. These data will be analysed together with high-resolution optical data already obtained by the applicants. This spectral coverage is necessary in order to derive reliable values of the effective temperature, surface gravity, chemical composition, mass-loss rate and stellar mass. Highly sophisticated model atmosphere, stellar wind and 'unified' model atmosphere codes will be used in this analysis. Our principal scientific objective is to determine the evolutionary status of the 'normal' and OBN/OBC supergiant subgroups, in particular we will investigate which of these objects are pre- or post-RSG (Red SuperGiant) stars by looking for evidence of anomalous H/He and C/N/O abundance ratios AND supporting evidence from unusally low stellar masses for the post-RSG stars as compared with the pre-RSG objects. Further analagous galactic objects, for which IUE data are available, will be analysed, providing valuable observational constraints for stellar evolution theory for different metallicities, so essential for our understanding of SN like SN1987A. The project will also be a valuable test of a new spectroscopic distance determination method for which the most luminous B-supergiants are ideal candidates being easily detectable as individual stars in other distant galaxies.
