Active Galactic Nuclei, powered by accretion onto a Supermassive Black Hole (SMBH), emit over the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Besides being sources where high energy physical processes take place, it is now emerging that they are leading actors in the formation and evolution of galaxies and, in general, of cosmic structures in the Universe. Fully understanding the story of galaxy formation (a top priority of current astrophysics) will thus require us to find when, where, and how SMBH grow and interact with their surroundings. The EXIST mission has been properly designed to tackle many of these hot questions. We will summarize here the steps forward expected from this mission regarding a few selected hot topics: a) the real census of SMBH in the Universe (by revealing and measuring heavily obscured accretion), b) the physics on how SMBH accrete (by studying the broad-band X-ray spectra) and c) the link between accretion power and jet power (by using observations of blazars).
