Modular development of EPO programs is a strategy that facilitates contributions by small research projects. HELIO-lab is an effort in this direction. It bundles a series of EPO modules about the Sun and the heliosphere. The project addresses families, elementary schools and scientists working with the public. All modules start from direct observation, sparking interest in solar phenomena. Personal experiences are used as a bridge to learning about science. We show how this approach has been put into practice by the example of the HELIO web-lab, a webpage with a surprising format and the appeal of a picture book.
