The frequency dependence of the mean drift rate of type III radio bursts appears to have a singularity at about 25 MHz owing to the fact that the plasma density decreases differently in the inner and outer corona. An analysis of this finding in the framework of various models of the corona does not confirm the hypothesis of a local source moving away from the sun within a dense streamer. Rather, the observations favor an optical model of the quiet corona.
