The frequency distributions of the concentrations of 14 elements in 118 samples of surface soil, and of 8 elements in the ferromagnesian phase of 226 samples of igneous rock, have been examined in some detail. Most of the 22 distributions either appeared to be gamma or had characteristic features of that distribution (logarithmic values negatively skewed and leptokurtic). Only two of the distributions were apparently lognormal. An attempt to detect any influence of the composition of the ferromagnesian phase on features of the distributions was unsuccessful.
