Planetesimals, Fragmentation
Scientific paper
This work presents a new semi-empirical model which describes the fragmentation of planetesimals. It combines a geometric decomposition with a physical approach. The available experimental data is well reproduced by the model. In a second step the further movement of the fragments is integrated numerically. The influence of different velocity models with respect to the reaccumulation onto the largest fragment is examined. The formation of binaries is calculated for the asteroid families Eos, Koronis and Themis. The uncertainty of the fragment velocity models remains, but the energy distribution coefficient is well determined at 0.1. Binary asteroids could help in further confining the model, however, the data is still too sparse.
