The red (A2Πi-X2Σ+) system of the CN free radical was produced in a jet-cooled coronaexcited supersonic expansion of helium using diazoacetonitrile as a precursor molecule. This spectrum was recorded with the McMath Fourier transform spectrometer of the National Solar Observatory. A total of 27 bands with v' = 8 to 21 and v'' = 1 to 11 (LeBlanc bands) in the range 16570-22760 cm-1 were observed and rotationally analyzed. The line positions of this system were fitted along with those of the violet (B2Σ+-X2Σ+) system, infrared vibration-rotation data, and microwave data in a global fit. RKR potential energy curves were constructed for the X2Σ+, A2Πi, and B2Σ+ states of this molecule, and Franck-Condon factors were calculated for the vibrational bands of the A-X, and B-X systems.
