At present two artificial satellites are operating in orbits around Venus. Both of these spacecraft were created primarily to map the surface of our heavenly neighbor with the help of radar. But the Venera 15 and 16 program of scientific investigations includes another important task: remote probing of the atmosphere. This is accomplished by two methods--infrared spectrometry and radar illumination.
