The Interactions in Understanding the Universe (I2U2) project supports education and outreach activities of major scientific initiatives by creating templates _ e-Labs for formal audiences and i-Labs for informal ones. These can be used for the creation of citizen science investigations.
As part of this, the Adler Planetarium in Chicago has created an i-Lab kiosk on the exhibit floor that introduces visitors to the phenomenon of cosmic rays. At the kiosk, visitors are invited to "be a part of the science” at home through an online portal. This portal connects visitors to several citizen science initiatives with estimations of how long each project will take to complete. One of these citizen science initiatives gives access to authentic cosmic ray data and guidance in the development of an in depth scientific study. Other, less-involved, citizen science initiatives will also be represented. Data will be collected showing the number of visitors who engage in the kiosk's activities, the number of visitors who decide to continue the involvement at home, and the types of activities selected at home.
In this poster we outline a research methodology to study what types of interactives appeal in museum settings and how the museum experience translates into follow-up behavior at home. This is the first part of an ongoing study that will look at how museum-based citizen science can translate to home-based involvement. We expect this study to provide valuable information about the desire of museum audiences to be involved in citizen science, the initial interest level of museum visitors to engage in citizen science at home, and the level of engagement in citizen science that museum visitors select once they are home.
