We propose to obtain images in three filters (B, V, and I) of Hickson Compact Group #31 (HCG31) in order to expand our ongoing study of the formation of stellar systems during galaxy mergers in the compact group environment. HCG31 contains a strongly interacting pair of galaxies (Mrk1089 and NGC1741) and examination of R-band images, obtained at the Palomar 1.5m, has revealed six clumps in the tidal debris with sizes and luminosities similar to dwarf galaxies. The enhanced spatial resolution available with WIYN will allow us to determine surface brightness profiles, establish color gradients, resolve sub-structure, and identify star-forming regions for tidal dwarf candidates as well as for dwarf galaxy members throughout the group. Data provided by the proposed observations will contribute significantly toward understanding the nature of tidal dwarf galaxies. And, by comparing properties of tidal dwarfs to those of the general dwarf galaxy population, we hope to assess the probability that some dwarf galaxies in compact groups may indeed have a tidal origin.
