Current models of the assembly of the terrestrial planets succeed in reproducing several features of the solar system configuration, but continue to suffer from several long-standing quantitative shortcomings. These include overpredicting the masses of Mercury and Mars, as well as the planetary eccentricities and spatial extent of the planetary grouping. I will discuss how starting from a radically different initial condition may alleviate some of these problems, and may connect the Solar System to the dynamically active planetary systems around other stars.
