Energy loss of the proton-nucleus component of super-high-energy cosmic rays in active galaxies is investigated theoretically. The rate of energy loss due to two main physical mechanisms, pion photoproduction and the production of electron-positron pairs, is calculated, and the results are given in graphic form. Estimates of the proton mean free path in the nucleus of the active galaxy NGC 4151 are also given.
