The study addresses a numerical analysis of the formation and evolution of dust mantles on the surfaces of cometary nuclei in order to determine the dependency on the perihelion distance, spin, and size of the nucleus. Two different regimes - free sublimation and gas diffusion, are considered. The nucleus is divided into latitude strips evolving independently of each other, and the computation starts with the whole nucleus in the free-sublimation regime. With the formation of a mantle, the code switches to the gas-diffusion regime. The formation of stable mantles is found to be frequent, most often when the spin axis is in the orbital plane and the perihelion distance is greater than 2 AU. It is noted that an implication of the presented results is that the nuclei of short-period comets may become completely mantled during their dynamical evolution into earth-approaching orbits.
