A new idea that the spatial structures in various galaxies are regarded as 'dissipative structures', which are found in nonequilibrium and open systems, is presented. Fundamental physical processes in galaxies are mutual interchange processes among three components of the interstellar medium (ISM). First, the temporal behaviors of the ISM are investigated by a set of model equations. Second, by adding the diffusion term to each component, the physical mechanisms for the formation of spatial structures are explored. It is proved that three different types of 'dissipative structures' may appear in this ISM system. Third, the pattern formation is studied in a differentially rotating disk. It is shown that the presented idea is successful in the formation of spiral structures in galaxies. Finally, this result is compared with that of the stochastic self-propagating star formation model.
