TV observations of the stratification of plasma clouds in the ionosphere are compared with mathematical-model results. The high spatial and temporal resolution of the TV equipment made possible a detailed study of the fine structure of plasma irregularities. It is shown that the observed stratification of plasma clouds and jets during their drift spreading can be explained by the development of a gradient-drift instability and an electric-field irregularity during the injection of an intense plasma disturbance.
